1982.02.08-03.13. Round Robin 25 rounds. 26 players. Ratings average 2471. Category IX. GM norm 17.5. IM norm 12.5. GM title: Ronald Watson Henley.

The event was a giant tournament in every sense of the words. With 26 players competing, it was the biggest round robin chess tournament after World War II. It also excelled in term of the quality of the participants: 18 GMs, 5 IMs, 2 FMs, and only 1 non-title player. Many familiar faces of the world élite were present: GM Vlastimil Hort, GM Zoltán Ribli, GM Walter Browne, GM Larry Christiansen, GM Gennadi Sosonko, GM Anthony Miles, and GM Florin Gheorghiu. The event was held in about a month at two cities, Solo (aka Surakarta), Central Java, and Denpasar, Bali.

Should a player score a GM norm in this tournament he wouldn’t need another norm elsewhere since the tournament had 25 rounds. According to the then FIDE regulation, to obtain a GM title a player needed to score GM norms in 24 rounds. The tournament belonged to category IX. It required 70% achievement to score a GM norm. Looks easy? 70% of 25 rounds means 17.5 VP. A whopping +10 was required!

IM Murray Chandler of New Zealand, IM Ronald Henley of USA, and, of course, host player IM Ardiansyah didn’t hide their intention to nail a GM title in this tournament. Chandler and Henley had already one GM norm in their pocket. Ardiansyah had been an IM since 1969. He needed badly to upgrade his title.

The tournament delivered many wonderful games right from the first half. Here is an example:

Walter Browne-Murray Chandler, Solo 1982
Walter Browne-Murray Chandler, Solo 1982

Black was clearly winning but Chandler added a beauty. After 48…Kg6!! 49.a4 Kh5 50.a5 R4xf3+! White resigned. He couldn’t stop a checkmate g5#.

The three IMs still looked good for the GM title pursuit in the halfway of the tournament. Chandler and Henley had 8 VP each, only half points adrift of the solo leader Hort. Ardiansyah was in the next order with 7.5 VP. The spirited Indonesian IM wasted a big chance to co-lead with Hort. He suffered an unnecessary loss inflicted by his compatriot IM Arovah Bachtiar.

In the second half Browne swung into high gear. The American won four consecutive games in round 13-16. He dismantled Bachtiar, Miles, GM Orestes Rodrigues, and FM Ronny Gunawan. He now had a full point lead with 12 VP. Our GM title hopefuls were doing well. Chandler joined the 2nd place with GM Larry Christiansen with 11 VP. The next group consisted of Ardiansyah, Henley, and Hort with 10 VP.

The moment of truth for Ardiansyah came in round 20. After a long fight in 64 moves, he had to bow to Christiansen. His hope for a GM title was nothing but dashed-off. Browne kept maintaining his full point lead. Now his closest rivals were Chandler and Christiansen.

Approaching to the end, the tournament started to take its toll. Many players didn’t have enough energy to push anymore. The avalanche of GM draws was unavoidable. Chandler and Henley were the exceptions. They still tried their best to win at all cost. Before the penultimate round both had 15.5 VP meaning they couldn’t afford to lose a point in the next rounds.

In the last two rounds Chandler was paired with Ardiansyah and GM Ivan Radulov while Henley had to square off with Bachtiar and Miles. It seemed that Chandler had an easier task than Henley. A disheartened Ardiansyah scored only half points in the last three rounds. Radulov was one of the best Bulgarian GMs but he wasn’t considered as tough as Miles at least on paper.

The game between Chandler and Ardiansyah was a seesaw battle. Chandler opted for the English Attack of the Sicilian Najdorf. Against such a tactical player like Ardiansyah, the sharp choice was proven unwise. The young man of New Zealand lost his way in the middle game. Finally Ardiansyah’s endgame skill told the story. He forced Chandler, who broke into tears, to resign. Meanwhile Henley managed to beat Bachtiar and Miles convincingly. Not only he successfully nailed a GM title but also caught up Browne to share the first place.

Another championship contender Christiansen surprisingly lost to Indonesian GM Herman Suradiradja in the last round.

The tournament had concluded with Browne grabbing the championship trophy. He edged out Henley on the better SB.

The performance of the host players, other than Suradiradja and Jacobus Sampouw, ranged from excellent (Ardiansyah) to acceptable (the rest). The tournament also ran smoothly. The only downside was the name of Benny Kileng nowhere on the participant list. The FM of West Java was arguably one of the country’s best. His Elo was 2395 equaling to Ardiansyah’s as the highest in Indonesia.
