1983.05.13-26. Round Robin 13 rounds. Rating average 2337. Category IV. IM norm 9. IM norms: Jimmy Liew Chee Meng, Sarwan Ginting.

After taking a short break in 1982, Asian Chess Masters Circuit was back in 1983. The Jakarta leg was the second one. The first was held in Hong Kong. Indonesia registered a notable achievement in both legs. FM Ronny Gunawan won the first leg with Australian IM Ian Rogers. In the second leg it was IM Ardiansyah turn to go on top.

Ardiansyah’s victory wasn’t unexpected. He was the first seed of the event. The result was certainly encouraging on the verge of his participation in the 2nd First Lady’s Cup in November that year.

IM Raja Ravi Sekhar of India failed to replicate his success two years ago. In 1981 he won the 1st Asian Masters Circuit 3rd Leg at Jakarta. He was a non-master back then. Now he entered the event as an IM but in the end only found himself at the middle of the table.

Indonesia had two non-rated players in the event, Bambang Iriaji and Sarwan Ginting. In the last National Championship held in Bandung 1982 Iriaji and Ginting were in the big ten but they couldn’t make the cut for Indonesian Olympiad team after failing in the further selection. Their fortune took different directions in this event. Iriaji had to struggle in the bottom half of the table while Ginting made a successful debut. Ginting grabbed his maiden IM norm.

The introduction of 32-year-old Sarwan Ginting to an internationally rated event was too late. He had played in many important domestic events such as national master tournaments, National Championships, PON (National Games), with good results. He deservedly belonged to Indonesian élite players at that time. According to our data Ginting played only one more rated event. His first IM norm also becomes his last. He has never achieved the IM title.
