1976.08.23-09.10. Round Robin 15 rounds. Rating average 2304. Category III. IM norm 10. IM title: Giam Choo Kwee. IM norms: Arovah Bachtiar, Jacobus Sawandar Sampouw, Rico Mascariñas.
GM Eugenio Torre showed to everybody that he was in a class of his own. He won the tournament easily. One and half a point adrift was Giam Choo Kwee from Singapore. He secured the IM norm with Indonesian Arovah Bachtiar and Jacobus Sampouw, and Filipino Rico Mascariñas. This was the second norm for Giam. Soon he was elected to IM.
The host players Bing Sardjono, Monang Sinulingga, and IM Max Arie Wotulo performed way below par. Sardjono should do better since he was second in the last National Championship. Sinulingga had yet to deliver after his meteoric rise in 1972. Wotulo showed age. He was probably approaching the end of his almost three decades chess career.
Many Indonesian chess fans had a high expectation before the start of the tournament that IM Ardiansyah could do ‘something’. Ardiansyah at 25-year old was in his peak form. He performed well in his last tournaments such as Nice Olympiad 1974, IBM 1974, and Singapore 1975. Initially Ardiansyah gave a glimmer hope by leading the tournament with 4 wins as in many rounds. Unfortunately he could add only 2.5 points for the rest of rounds. He also lost on walkover to Arovah Bachtiar.
What happened to Ardiansyah? The press could not get a word from the usually outspoken Ardiansyah. An Indonesian media speculated about a possible marching order for Indonesian players to support Bachtiar and Sampouw. Percasi (All Indonesia Chess Federation) officials were quick to deny the rumor. The head of organizing committee, Teuku Djam Mohamad Said, said to the journalists, “I reject the public opinion that the IM norms (for Bachtiar and Sampouw) were results of unfair play because there is no such thing in this event.”
