2015.04.15-22. Round Robin 11 rounds. 12 players. g/90/30. Rating average 2451. Category IX. GM norm: Sean Winshand Cuhendi. IM norms: Muhammad Luthfi Ali, Medina Warda Aulia.
The massive Elo rating favorite GM Sergei Nikolaevich Tiviakov failed to assert his domination in the 2nd Japfa GMs tournament held at Jakarta, Indonesia. He dragged down himself even further by playing a suspicious game against his student IM Irene Kharisnma Sukandar. The Dutch GM lost easily in a Scandinavian game. Tiviakov tried to ward off the speculation, “I have taught her everything I know about the opening.” Meneer Tiviakov, if you knew that your opponent was a very knowledgeable in the Scandinavia why did you still play it in the first place?
The road to the champion was far from easy for IM Sean Winshand Cuhendi, the winner of the tournament. He had to compete head-to-head and neck-to-neck with Vietnamese GM Nguyễn Anh Dũng.
They both scored the same VP (7) after 10th round. Sean in this round had to play the last year winner Tiviakov while Nguyễn was a favorite to get full points from FM Muhammad Luthfi Ali. Behind white pieces Nguyễn quickly took the initiative. He was up a pawn entering the endgame. Still the Indonesian FM presented Nguyễn many problems to solve. Sean on another board was the one who had to withstand the pressures. Eventually the tenacious resistances of the two Indonesians were rewarded by half a point for each.
Sean had to let WGM Mediana Warda Aulia get away with half a point in the last round. Aulia was very much in need of the points to register her first IM norm. The result gave Nguyễn a big chance to be a solo winner of the tournament if he could beat IM Ferry Firman Syah. It was very unfortunate for him, Ferry played brilliantly to beat the Vietnamese GM. That was Nguyễn’s only loss in the tournament. It couldn’t have come in a worse time.
Sean finally grabbed the championship trophy. The 18-year old high school student sweetened his success by securing his maiden GM norm. He told media that he didn’t satisfy with his win and would train harder to better himself. He maybe still a teenager but now he has joined an élite group of Indonesian players who won a GM tournament in their home soils. The others are GM Ardiansyah, GM Utut Adianto, GM Edhi Handoko, and IM Denny Juswanto.
