Incomplete.
Challengers. 16 rounds Round Robin. 15 players. 4 games.
Challengers Playoff. 2 rounds Match. 2 players. 1 game.
Final. 10 rounds Match. 2 players. 2 games.

On historical notes this was the first time in a National Championship players no longer represented their cities but regions/provinces instead. The 7th National Championship had a different format than the previous ones. Firstly players had to qualify to represent their regions/provinces. Those players then played in a Round-Robin challenger tournament. Finally the winner of this tournament was arranged to play in a match with Baris M Hutagalung, the defending champion who won the National Championship 1960 held in Medan.

Almost nothing separated between Arovah Bachtiar and Lim Hong Gie. The two dominated the challenger tournament. They tallied for first spot with 11.5 VP each. The playoff also ended equally 1-1. Arovah then went on to the final stage based only on his better SB (Sonneborrn Berger).

At the final stage on-fire Arovah proved too much for Baris. Arovah took lead immediately by beating Baris in round 1. Baris flashed a glimmer hope of resistance when he evened the scoreline after winning round 2 and held Arovah to draw in five more rounds. But that’s all. In the following rounds Baris’s lack of routines was finally evident. He lost in round 8 and 10. Arovah won the match 6-4. This was Arovah’s second national crown after his first in 1953.
