2014.04.20-25. Round Robin 9 rounds. 10 players. g/90/30. Rating average 2445. Category VIII. GM norm 6.5. IM norm 4.5. GM norm: Nguyễn Huỳnh Minh Huy.

The wonderful people at Japfa Comfeed Indonesia did it again. Now their annual chess festival was only one step shy from hitting two figures. One of many sections of the glorious festival was a round-robin GM tournament. The last of that kind in Indonesia was 6 years ago i.e. 1st ASEAN Masters Circuit 1st Leg at Tarakan, East Borneo, 2008.

The tournament involved five Indonesian and five overseas players. Dutch GM Sergei Tiviakov was the top draw. The next seed was GM Suat Atalik of Turkey. The host pinned their hope on a veteran IM Denny Juswanto and a rising star IM Farid Firman Syah. They were expected to nail a GM norm. Juswanto needed only one more norm to complete his GM title.

Juswanto and Firman Syah opened up their account nicely with a victory over Filipino IM Rolando Nolte and Vietnamese IM Nguyễn Huỳnh Minh Huy respectively. In round 2 Juswanto wasted one of his bullets. He lost to his younger compatriot FM Luthfi Ali. Firman Syah maintained his sparkling form. He solo-led the tournament until round 3. In round 5 he was still on top but had to share it with Tiviakov and Atalik. Juswanto was in the next order with half points back. Unfortunately for the both GM norm hopefuls everything went downhill from here. They could only add one more VP for the rest of the rounds. The eventual winner Tiviakov made amends to his slow start. He scored a quadruple in the last four rounds.

The tournament ended with no Indonesian players good enough to grab a GM norm. A guest player Nguyễn Huỳnh Minh Huy was the only one who succeeded to do so. The time was running out for 55-year old Danny Juswanto. His play looked sluggish overall. Perhaps his inclusion in the tournament was a bit surprise for him. His last round-robin international tournament was 10 years ago, Makita Lakoni 2004.

Holding a round-robin GM tournament is not something ordinary for a non-chess country like Indonesia. So when we actually do it, we need to set a clear goal. Saying that ‘our players have played well as their rating suggested’ or ‘it is good as part of the learning process’ simply doesn’t cut it. GM Utut Adianto, the head of the organizing committee and the Vice Chairman of Percasi (All Indonesia Chess Federation), couldn’t help to vent his disappointment. He said in the closing ceremony, “…Percasi in joint with various third parties have given the best effort to hold chess tournaments in a national or an international level. But without the support of hard-working players, that would be a waste of a large sum of funding. It is a pity that our players can’t capitalize from the tournament in the best possible manner…”
