Jakarta GMs, Jakarta 1986

The event is the most successful chess tournament held in Indonesia to date in term of producing GM norms. Three players who had the honor were IM Ardiansyah, IM Utut Adianto, and IM Ronny Gunawan. Ardiansyah nailed his second and last GM norm. He also shared the first place with Yugoslav GM, Petar Popović.

Wahono Cup, Jakarta 1982

The famous Tanah Karo chess player, Monang Sinulingga, quite predictably won the tournament. He played professionally. He didn’t push against the in-form players but was an absolute menace to players in the bottom ten. Monang completed his victory with the Best Game Award for his beautiful win to Fabian Lumentut in round 3.

Indonesia-France Women Match, Jakarta/Bekasi 2012

France confirmed their favorite status by winning the blitz chess match, 3-1, on the first day. But the French delights ended up here. On the following days the Indonesian team stunned the French, 10-6 in the rapid. In the classical, France succumbed to defeat by about the same margin. Altogether Indonesia beat France 20.5-15.5.

2nd Indonesia Open, Jakarta 2012

Chinese are coming. Led by their first string players, GM Yú Yāngyī and GM Lǐ Chāo, China conquered the second edition of Indonesia Open Chess Championship. Yú and Lǐ, the last year winner, shared the top honor with 7.5 VP each. The third place belonged to 7 players with 6.5 VP including the top seed GM Ivan Sokolov of the Netherlands.

1st Indonesia National Women Championship, Yogyakarta 1978

Albeit only three provinces participated, the inaugural of National Women Chess Championship didn’t lack of quality players. Hanik Maria and Mun’yati represented Central Java while Nanik Wijaya led the team of DI Yogyakarta. DKI Jakarta sent their best players in the likes of Betty Pontoh, Imasniti, Tati Nurachmanti, and Darmayanti Tamin.

Susanto Megaranto-Wesley So Match, Jakarta 2008

The world’s youngest GM, 14-year-old Wesley Barbasa So of Philippines, continued his amazing streak. A few days after winning 10th Dubai Open, he dominated GM Susanto Megaranto in a one-on-one chess match at Pyramid Building, Senayan, Jakarta, in April 2008. The final score was 4-2 for the Pinoy player.

FIDE Women Interzonal, Jakarta 1993

The event was part of the Women World Chess Championship 1993-6 cycle. Seven seats were available towards Candidate Matches. The top seeds, GM Pia Cramling and GM Maia Chiburdanidze with their towering ratings, destined to have owned the two seats. The rest of players were going to battle for the left spots.
