Central Java Provincial Championship, Semarang 1994

Looking to the participant roster, the chess event promised to be exciting. Three veteran NMs, Maslan of Semarang, Salatun (Grobogan), and Masroni HS (Brebes), took part. Central Java’s NMs of the younger generation also plunged into the arena: Abdul Jalil (Semarang), Okky Irawan (Solo), and Achmad Yazid (Pemalang).

The event was almost a mirror of the National Championship with the exception of the absences of GM Utut Adianto and FM Ruben Gunawan. It also served as a preliminary selection of that year National Championship Qualification. Thirty players would go to a further selection to represent the province.

Central Java Provincial Games Preliminary, Purwodadi 2001

National Master Jumadi from Semarang City took the number one spot in convincing style. He scored full 5 VP as in many rounds. The preliminaries of the Provincial Games (Pekan Olahraga Daerah) were organized by each residency (keresidenan) of Central Java province to choose its representatives.

2nd DKI Jakarta Invitational NMs, Jakarta 1982

IM Ardiansyah owned Jakarta in those years around. He practically swept over chess competitions at the city. This tournament was no exception. Ardiansyah won the master section quite easily with 1.5 points cushion to the runner-up Sutan Aritonang. The non-master section was co-championed by Edward L Tobing and Harry Siregar.

Utut Adianto Blindfold Simultaneous Exhibition, Pekanbaru 2006

GM Utut Adianto won all the games. One of his opponents was Ichsanuddin Lubis, Adianto’s ex rival when he was a junior player at Jakarta. Other participant was Soni Indrayana, a young player from Riau. This was not ‘blind chess’ in real sense since Adianto could still see the notations.

Taufik Halay led until the penultimate round. All he needed was half points in the last round to conclude the tournament. Unfortunately his opponent, Andrean Susilodinata, had a different idea and beat him. The surprise champion was Tirta Chandra Purnama who entered the tournament as the lowest rated player.

DKI Jakarta Provincial Championship, Jakarta 1980

Twenty one years old Denny Juswanto became the champion of DKI Jakarta for the second time. The first was in 1973 when he was only 14 years of age. The win was decided in the ultimate round when he beat Fabian Lumentut. The future Indonesian ace Utut Adianto had no better than 13th place.
