1st Online Chess Olympiad Division 1 Pool A, Chess.com 2020

How would Indonesian chess fare among the world élite? If this event is any good as a benchmark, with a pinch of salt, then the answer is not too bad. Indonesia finished at 7th in the 1st Online Chess Olympiad 2020 Division 1 Pool A. It wasn’t spectacular but enough to cement Indonesia’s place alongside other established members of the top division. During the competition Indonesia lost 4 times, drew twice, and won thrice.

Despite suffering three losses from nine rounds Indonesia successfully promoted to the first division. Indonesia’s fate was decided in the last round with a convincing victory over Bangladesh, 5.5-0.5. The victory brought the MP collected by Indonesia to 12. Meanwhile, Australia, which was Indonesia’s rival, lost to Belarus by 2.5-3.5. That meant the Kangaroo country was stuck at 11 MP.

4th Japfa GMs, Yogyakarta 2019

GM Rustam Khusnutdinov of Kazakhstan won the event. Even though Rustam was a capable chess player but his victory came up as a bit surprise. He has switched his chess career into coaching rather than playing years ago. The event was his first classical tournament after long hiatus. He had been quite a while in Indonesia to work as a member of coaching staff in Indonesian National Training Center.

1st Japfa Festival, Jakarta 2003

This is when a legend began. Following the successful chess events that they held in the past, Japfa Comfeed Indonesia decided to hold a giant chess event. They dubbed it as a festival rather than a tournament and they really meant it. The inaugural Japfa Festival broke the record as the chess event with the most participants in Indonesia. It was attended by no less than 556 players.

Japfa WGMs, Solo 2018

Romanian IM Alina l’Ami, a familiar face to Indonesian chess public, became the top seed. She was followed by Georgian WGM Keti Tsatsalashvili and Philippine WGM Janelle Mae Frayna as the second and third seed respectively. The host expected that their players, especially the ones with the wordiest names, WIM Chelsie Monica Ignesias Sihite and WIM Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia Citra, to register a WGM norm.

1st Tunas Jaya Classic, Jakarta 2018

One of the oldest chess clubs in Indonesia, Tunas Jaya, held a FIDE rated tournament for the first time. It attracted 72 players with 9 FIDE titled ones among them. FM Johan Gunawan and IM Tirto became the top seeds. The unrated-untitled-and-unheralded Agus Santoso emerged on top as the surprising champion. Agus had the best tiebreaks in a 4-way tie with Hasian Panggabean, Gerald Pramoedya Priguna, and Ricky Rismanto.

7th Piala Raja FMs, Yogyakarta 2019

Piala Raja held the FMs section for the second time. The current edition had more players than the previous one. It involved 10 players with 5 host players alongside 5 guests. The purpose of the event was to give more playing time and chances to gain more ratings to the host players. The host also pinned their hope to their best player, Muhammad Kahfi Maulana, to race for the championship glory.
