Wotulo Memorial GMs, Jakarta 2001

The not-given-much-chance IM Denny Juswanto delivered a stellar performance by topping the table. He was unbeatable in 13 games and scored his first GM norm. Two other Indonesian players Cecep Kosasih and Yoseph Majella had their shares of success with IM norms. India’s GM Krishnan Sasikiran failed to live up his 2600+ rating.

Arovah Bachtiar equaled Béla Berger in the play-off rounds but the latter went through to the Interzonal Championship because he had better tie-break in previous qualification rounds. Another Indonesian player, the future successful lawyer Lim Hong Gie (aka Lugito Hayadi), was in the third place. Narrowly missed by half a point.

38th Indonesia National Championship, Batam 2006

18-year-old Susanto Megaranto took home the cup with 12 VP, one and half a point ahead his seniors IM Nasib Ginting and FM Awam Wahono. Arif Yanuar of DIY became the winner of the shortest game. His opponent got disqualified before even moved the pieces because his cell phone rang.

Three best Indonesian players joined three world class women players to participate in this unique event. Indonesian players were hand in hand to lift GM Utut Adianto to the top spot but failing miserably. Adianto got 3.5 points of possible 4 from Indonesian players. Another sad day for fair play.

DKI Jakarta Provincial Championship, Jakarta 1981

IM Ardiansyah edged out Fabian Lumentut on better Solkoff to grab number one spot. Defending champion Denny Juswanto found himself at 8th. The Indonesian first GM, Herman Suradiradja, was anonymous most of the time. Losing to unheralded players like Hengky Wijaya was simply unacceptable for a player of his stature.

22nd Indonesia National Championship, Jakarta 1984

IM Edhi Handoko rekindled the memory of 1978 National Championship when he won the event as a teenager. The new kid in town Nasib Ginting caught everyone off guard by taking runner up position only half a point shy from Handoko. Among his victims were IM Ardiansyah and IM Ronny Gunawan.

Jababeka Women International, Jakarta 2005

WIM Jana Krivec and WGM Nana Alexandria came out on top. Indonesia hopeful young talent WFM Irene Kharisma Sukandar respectfully claimed third place. The experienced Sri Vidawati was supposed to be less than happy to find her self at tenth place out of 12 players. This was her last appearance in an international event to date.
