1994.05.??-??. Swiss 6 rounds. Unknown number of players.
The 1994 Central Java Provincial Championship was held in May. The event took place at Semarang, the capital city of Central Java. The winner would be representing the province to the 30th National Championship at Yogyakarta. Players ranking 2 to 8 had to go to further selection in the National Championship Qualification Zonal 4.
Looking to the participant roster, the event promised to be exciting. Three veteran NMs, Maslan of Semarang, Salatun (Grobogan), and Masroni HS (Brebes), took part. Central Java’s NMs of the younger generation also plunged into the arena: Abdul Jalil (Semarang), Okky Irawan (Solo), and Achmad Yazid (Pemalang). They were accompanied by strong non-masters such as Joko Purbowo (Banyumas), Arfan Khaidar (Pekalongan), Sutarno (Klaten), and Jumadi (Semarang). Last year Joko Purbowo won a strong 1st Nyonya Meneer Cup Tournament. The talented Arfan Khaidar was that year ASEAN University Student Champion.
After finishing 6 rounds in the Swiss System, Abdul Jalil captured the first prize. He won 5 games and let only 1 draw. He was followed closely with half a point cushion by Joko Purbowo. Maslan proved that he was still a tough nut to crack. He managed to place himself on the third rank.
Abdul Jalil’s victory earned him a ticket to the National Championship. Meanwhile Joko Purbowo registered a big success in the qualification zone. He won the event and nailed the NM title.
