Dominos Fritz Kilian Nicolas Harahap had an 8-year-stint as a Chairman of Percasi (All Indonesia Chess Federation) during 1956-64. Although he was no longer a Percasi official, he remained a prominent figure among Indonesian chess community. The event was held by Percasi to pay tribute to him.
Nasib Ginting won the open section. He edged out Hendry Jamals on the better PS (Progressive Score). Nasib’s first place was hardly a surprise. He had cemented his place in the national élite a year ago when he placed himself as Vice National Champion. Together with IM Ardiansyah and IM Edhi Handoko, he was a player to watch in this event. The case was bit different for young and talented Hendry Jamals. He had been known as a strong player in Jakarta but hadn’t made any impact in the national level.
In the women section 15-year-old Upi Darmayana Tamin almost failed to capture the first place. She lost to unheralded Wahyuni and an elementary school student, Susianah Handayani. Lucky to her, she somehow could cope with her erratic form to beat her closest rivals Betty Makalew and Tati Nurachmanti. The three finally had the same VP but Upi had the best SB to grab the championship trophy.
The event witnessed the emergence of some promising young players. Aside of Hendry Jamals, Upi Tamin, and Susianah Handayani, Saudara Sitanggang was also worth mentioning. He was in the top 5 among the big guns. His style was fresh with sharp combinative intuitions. He made a spectacular queen sacrifice in his victories against Hendry Jamals and no less than Ardiansyah.
