Edhi Handoko was dubbed as Indonesian new star after winning national championship in 1978 as a teenager. He underlined that he had something special when he defended the title a year later. But as what happened to many Indonesian talents, he somewhat failed to live up the expectation. He finally got his GM title in 1991 when he was not young anymore.

He was probably the most decorated chess player in Indonesia. He won national championship no less than four times. Handoko also won gold medals in Indonesian National Games (PON) 1985 both in individual and team events. He was a member of Indonesian team who won a silver medal SEA Games 2003 In Vietnam, and the champion of Asian Intercity Championship Team in 1993 and 1994.

In his last few years his physical condition had been declined mainly because of high blood pressure problems. Indonesian pride Grand Master Edhi Handoko passed away on February 17th, 2009 at the age of 48.
