2016.05.19-21. Match 4 rounds. 2 rounds in classical, 2 rounds in rapid. 2 players. Rating average 2427.

The official title of the event was “Ekatama Women Chess Match”. Ekatama was a group of companies that focused on the industrial engineering field. It was owned by Eka Putra Wirya, a well known chess philanthropist in Indonesia. This event was only one of many that they had taken under their wings.

The event was a match between the best female players from their respective country, Indonesia and France. Indonesian’s IM Irene Kharisma Sukandar won the National Women Championship four times in a row from 2006 to 2010. She also won the Asian Women Championship in 2012 and 2014. The Moldovan-turn-French IM Almira Skripchenko needed no introduction. She had been part of the élite in the women chess world for years. Judging from the Elo rating’s gap Sukandar was an underdog in the match but with her form was on the rise after she obtained an IM title a year ago anything could happen.

The match produced only one decisive game played in a classical time control in round 2. The first round in classical and 2 rapid games in round 3 and 4 ended in draws.

After a quiet game in round 1 Skripchenko showed her intention to win in round 2. She quickly took the initiative. Although Sukandar tried her best to withstand the pressures, her position almost crumbled in move 41. At this point what the French IM needed to do was making a pawn thrust g4-g5. Mysteriously she budged off. It gave Sukandar an important chance to shelter her king. Finally Sukandar’s passed d-pawn told the end of the story.

With the results Sukandar beat Skripchenko 2.5-1.5. Sukandar stayed humble as always. She said to a reporter afterwards that Skripchenko’s jet lag might contribute to her defeat.
