2018.04.25-05.01. Round Robin 11 rounds. 12 players. g/90/30. Rating average 2229.
The event was held together with the 2018 Japfa GMs tournament. Romanian IM Alina l’Ami, a familiar face to Indonesian chess public, became the top seed. She was followed by Georgian WGM Keti Tsatsalashvili and Philippine WGM Janelle Mae Frayna as the second and third seed respectively.
The host didn’t field their best players IM Irene Kharisma Sukandar and WGM Medina Warda Aulia, instead opted to give a chance to their second string players. Indonesia expected that their players, especially the ones with the most wordy names, WIM Chelsie Monica Ignesias Sihite and WIM Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia Citra, to register a WGM norm. That norm could be attained with at least 7 VP.
The surprise came as early as round 1. The veteran WGM Anda Šafranska from France beat the top seed Alina l’Ami. Alina blundered her piece at move 32 and resigned 14 moves later. The surprise from the French WGM didn’t stop here. Anda claimed another high profile victim in the next round. She defeated the second seed Keti Tsatsalashvili. Public was waiting what would happen in the third round when Anda got to play the third seed Janelle Mae Frayna. This time the surprise didn’t materialize. Janelle successfully beat Anda.
The host players performed very well in the halfway of the tournament. Chelsie and Citra alongside Janelle co-led the tournament with 4.5 VP. WFM Ummi Fisabilillah was in the next order with 4 VP. It was worth noting that Ummi was unbeatable until this point. The first seed Alina was obviously out of form. She lagged behind with only 50% or 3 VP. The second seed Keti was slightly better with 3.5 VP.
The last 5 rounds took an unexpected turn. Citra and Ummi had to quit from their pursuit of the WGM norm after they lost in the hands of Janelle and Keti respectively in round 9. Chelsie had the same fate. It was a heartbreak failure for her. She scored 6.5 VP only half a point shy from the norm. In the champion race Keti bagged 5 VP from 5 rounds. She took over the lead from Janelle. She became the champion with a full point cushion from the runner-up.
Although Chelsie, Citra, and Ummi failed to register a WGM norm, they displayed the admirable guts and attempts. Unfortunately the other host players, WIM Shanti Nur Abidah Santoso, WFM Baiq Vina Lestari, and WFM Retno Wijayanti, were clearly outclassed. They ended in the bottom of the standing table.
