Ardiansyah

Born at Banjarmasin, 1951.12.05. Best rating 2465 (1991). National champion 1969, 1970, 1974, 1976. IM 1969. GM 1986.

The second Indonesian GM.

Many foreign media mistakenly write that abbreviation ‘H’ in front of his name as his first. ‘H’ is Haji, an honorary religious title for a Muslim. Some of them, such as ChessGames.com, have gone too far by writing his name as ‘Herman Ardiansyah’ which is certainly incorrect. They probably confuse him with Herman Suradiradja, another Indonesian GM. His name is simply Ardiansyah or Ardiansjah in Indonesian old spellings.

A prolific chess writer, the late Ds FKN Harahap, wrote that Ardiansyah was one of the best Indonesian chess player ever. The others were Tan Hoan Liong and Baris M Hutagalung. He possesses world class tactical skill and amazing fantasies but lack of understandings of the details of many modern-and-not-so-modern openings, sometimes-anti-positional approaches, and above all erratic forms prevent him to break 2500 rating barrier. His games in First Lady Cup 1982 probably best reflect the aforementioned.
