Utut Adianto tried very hard to prove that he was the best Indonesian player there was. He prevailed. Despite significant rating gaps he lead Indonesian team to successfully beat their guests. ROW players, especially Erik van den Doel and Darryl Johansen, seemed not ready for tough battle and played with vacation mode on.

Adianto-Short Chess Match, Jakarta 1996

Nigel Short lived up his reputation as an ex World Champion Challenger by beating the host player Utut Adianto 4.5-1.5. Adianto defeat was largely attributed to the holes of his repertoire as black player. Adianto had no answer to Advance variation of Caro-Kann defense played by Short. Adianto lost twice and escaped with draw once with black pieces.

The Future World Chess Champion Match, Jakarta 2001

This was the first international match between junior players held in Indonesia. The two players had the same age, 11 years old. Nguyễn Ngọc Trường Sơn became the champion in Junior Word Championship U10 2000. Andrean Susilodinata was at 7th place in that event. Nguyễn defeated Andrean 4.5-1.5.

Arovah Bachtiar equaled Bela Berger in playoff rounds but the latter went on to interzone because he had better tie-break in previous qualification rounds. Another Indonesian player, the future successful lawyer Lim Hong Gie (Lugito Hayadi), was in the third place. Narrowly missed by half points.
