PGN 2020.01.09. 6 games. Complete.

2019.11.12-16. Match 6 rounds. 2 players. Rating average 2483.

The match became an event for the Indonesian hopeful young talent IM Novendra Priasmoro to hunt the Grand Master (GM) title. Novendra already had enough GM norms in his pocket but his current Elo rating, 2495, was still shy away from the minimum requirement of 2500. In this match Novendra was going to play Vietnamese GM Nguyễn Anh Dũng for 6 rounds. Novendra was required to score 4 points or more to obtain the GM title.

The Chairman of Percasi (All Indonesia Chess Federation) GM Utut Adianto also hoped that Novendra could use the event to nail his GM title. “This is a great opportunity for Novendra because in addition to playing at home, the players’ levels are about on par,” said Adianto.

Novendra started very well. In the first round he showed some sparkling tactical skills behind black pieces. Nguyễn was forced to resignation in only 23 moves.

This victory of course delighted Novendra’s fans but the manner of the Vietnamese GM’s play raised a question mark, “Is Nguyễn playing seriously or he is here to just pave away Novendra for the GM title?” Nguyễn answered the question in the third round. Following a few mistakes from Novendra’s part, Nguyễn notched a nice win to level the scoreline.

Now Novendra faced a difficult task. He had to score at leat 2.5 points in the next three rounds. Novendra tried his best but eventually all games ended in draw. In all honesty Nguyễn even had the upper hand in round 4 and 5.

Novendra reflected, “…I’m sorry for being frank but the experience can’t be deceived. Even though he has lower Elo rating, Anh Dũng is more experienced than me.”
