20th PON (National Games) will be held at the province of Papua scheduled from October 20th to November 2nd, 2020. Chess will have five medal sets to fight over in five events: team, individual, women team, women individual, and veteran.
The qualification phase for individual and team events of the 20th PON was split into 5 zonals: Sumatra, Java, Bali-Borneo, Celebes, and Eastern Indonesia. Sumatra and Java zonals get 2 representatives each while the other zonals get 1 each. Rank 3 and 4 from Sumatra and Java zonals, and rank 2 and 3 of the other zonals will qualify for playoff rounds to select 2 more representatives.
The Java zonal qualification took place at the city of Cilacap, Central Java. This zonal was undoubtedly the most competitive zonal of all with star studded participants such as teams from West Java, DKI Jakarta, and East Java. Those teams were not only favorites to qualify but were also strong contenders to win medals in the final phase at Papua as well.
West Java in the team event featured the Indonesian best player GM Susanto Megaranto alongside 3 IMs. DKI Jakarta fielded 4 young masters with 2 of them, IM Sean Winshand Cuhendi and IM Novendra Priasmoro, had attained GM norms. East Java team was assembled with players who won the National Championships in the recent years (IM Mochamad Ervan, FM Pitra Andyka, and FM Muhamad Agus Kurniawan) and multiple National Champion in age groups FM Catur Adi Sagita.
A surprise happened in round 2. Central Java defeated West Java 2.5-1.5. Three games ended in a draw but unexpectedly West Java player IM Anjas Novita lost to 17-year-old untitled Iqbal Mustofa in a 83-move fight. This was the second time Iqbal had claimed a high profile victim. He toppled IM Novendra Priasmoro in round 1. West Java team made a speedy recovery. They beat the previously undefeated DKI Jakarta in round 3. The event became a three-horse race among West Java, DKI Jakarta, and Central Java until the penultimate round finished. In the last round West Java and DKI Jakarta beat Banten and DI Yogyakarta respectively while Central Java had to share the spoils with East Java.
The individual event became a nightmare for the first seed IM Tirta Chandra Purnama of DKI Jakarta. His position in the standing table almost hit the cellar only better than the tailender Banten player Parlindungan Hutabarat. FM Arif Abdul Hafiz of West Java won the event convincingly without a single loss. The runner-up was veteran IM Tirto. He was followed by the winner of the 2019 Chairman of DPR RI Cup Muhammad Kahfi Maulana in third and the bronze medalist of the 2019 National Championship FM Khairul Anam in the 4th.
With the results West Java and DKI Jakarta in the team event and Arif Abdul Hafiz and Tirto in the individual event qualified for the final phase. Central Java and East Java in the team event and Muhammad Kahfi Maulana and Khairul Anam in the individual event still had the chance to qualify if they passed the playoff rounds scheduled in November 2019 at North Sumatra.
