GM Ruben Muljadi Gunawan was one of the most talented players to have ever graced Indonesia. Many believed his talent was better than that of GM Utut Adianto.
Ruben showed his potential at the early age when he won National Championship U16 at Bandung 1982. The achievement gave him the right to play in Asian Junior Championship 1983 held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia which he eventually won. He should get the IM title by then but unlucky for him, the tournament lacked of participants. As a consolation Ruben was awarded an FM title. A year later at Jakarta Ruben won another national champion title. This time was for U19.
Ruben soon developed himself as a very knowledgeable chess player. Adianto nicknamed him a walking chess encyclopedia. He was also most feared for his expertise in blitz games. Oddly Ruben’s chess career had made only a little progress during 1984-93.
Based on our records, Ruben participated in only three international events, World Junior Championship 1984 (Kiljava, Finland) and 1985 (Sharjah, UAE) and Asian Team Championship 1987 (Singapore). Ruben found himself competing among soon-to-be-superstars at Kiljava in the likes of Kiril Georgiev, Jeroen Piket, Alexey Dreev, and …Viswanathan Anand. The 16-year-old registered a respectable score, 6 VP of 13 games. Ruben fared much better in the following year. He shared the 4th place with Viswanathan Anand and Vassily Ivanchuk, among others. Ruben was part of Indonesian team who won second place after China in Singapore 1987.
In 1994 Ruben got a rare opportunity playing in Europe and USA. It was for only couple months but enough for him to earn his first IM norm. Four years later he got his GM. He then played in two Chess Olympiads, Istanbul, Turkey 2000 and Calvia, Spain 2004.
Ruben could not finish the event at Calvia. He was hospitalized. That was the first time he was diagnosed to have pneumonia. The disease finally proved to be too tough for his health. GM Ruben Muljadi Gunawan passed away on August 27th, 2005 at the age of 37.
Although Ruben had an occasional success in his chess career, he has never reached his full potential. An article in Inteligensia magazine mentioned his outrageous lifestyle as the cause. This might have some truth but obviously he has suffered from the lack of opportunities to play high level chess abroad. Only in 1994 he got this opportunity. That means after his FM title in 1983 he had to wait, and to spoil, eleven golden years of his chess career.
