The world’s youngest GM, 14-year-old Wesley Barbasa So of Philippines, continued his amazing streak. A few days after winning 10th Dubai Open, he dominated GM Susanto Megaranto in a one-on-one match at Pyramid Building, Senayan, Jakarta, in April 2008.
Wesley held an Elo rating of 2540. Susanto was higher at 2561. They both were the highest rated player of their respective country.
In the first three games Wesley posted mercilessly three straight victories leaving Susanto no chance to win in this six games duel. Susanto needed to sweep off the last three games to salvage a draw. Although Susanto tried his best he finally bowed to Wesley. The final score was 4-2 for the Pinoy player.
The match was part of 4th Japfa Chess Festival, the largest festival of its kind in Indonesia.
