Lodewijk Prins Matches, Indonesia 1956

A famous Dutch chess master Lodewijk Prins visited Indonesia in 1956. He spent two and half months traveling around Java, Sumatera, and Borneo. He played at Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Semarang, Medan, and Pematang Siantar. He also visited the home of the 1st Indonesia National Champion Arovah Bachtiar, the city of Banjarmasin, Borneo.

Yuri Averbakh 8-Match, Jakarta 1956

The chess event was held to honour GM Yuri Averbakh during his visit to Indonesia. Not all of the best Indonesian players participated, most notably Baris Hutagalung and Ang Tjing Sing. Baris won the last National Championship held at Jakarta, 1955. He was arranged to play Averbakh in a separate one-on-one match.

4th Indonesia National Championship, Magelang 1956

The 4th National Championship would be remembered as a tournament of surprises. Abubakar Baswedan stunned Arovah Bachtiar with better SB (Sonneborn Berger) to take home the championship trophy. Surabaya’s player Abubakar had never been at the final stage of the previous three National Championships.
