Eight teams from cities/regencies of East Java province battled for Percasi Cup. As predicted Surabaya team won the cup. The only team who gave them a fierce challenge was Jember. Surabaya performance was highly boosted by their third board player, Machfud. Machfud excelled from the rest of pack by scoring 100%, 7 VP from 7 games.

DKI Jakarta PON Chess Team Tryouts, Jakarta 1981

The tryouts involved three clubs and two DKI Jakarta teams. The members of DKI Jakarta PON (Pekan Olahraga Nasional or National Games) team were Ardiansyah, Sutan Aritonang, Sarwan Ginting, Herman Kusnadi, and Denny Juswanto. Ardiansyah didn’t participate in these tryouts since he was playing abroad.

3rd Asian Masters Chess Circuit 3rd Leg, Jakarta 1981

The best Indonesian players, Handoko, Ardiansyah, and Kileng, could only grab runner up positions. Indian Raja Ravisekhar won the event. For the host players Syarif Mahmud and Achmad Fauzi, the tournament was their first international appearance. Both players had respectable places on the table.

DKI Jakarta Provincial Chess Championship, Jakarta 1981

Ardiansyah edged out Fabian Lumentut with better solkoff to grab number one spot. Defending champion Denny Juswanto found himself at 8th. The Indonesian first GM, Herman Suradiradja, was anonymous most of the time. Losing to unheralded players like Hengky Wijaya was simply unacceptable for a player of his stature.
