1st First Lady’s Cup, Solo/Denpasar 1982

The event was a giant tournament in every sense of the words. With 26 players competing, it was the biggest round robin chess tournament after World War II. It also excelled in term of the quality of the participants. Many familiar faces of the world élite were present: Hort, Ribli, Browne, Christiansen, Sosonko, Miles, and Gheorghiu.

Wahono Cup, Jakarta 1982

The famous Tanah Karo chess player, Monang Sinulingga, quite predictably won the tournament. He played professionally. He didn’t push against the in-form players but was an absolute menace to players in the bottom ten. Monang completed his victory with the Best Game Award for his beautiful win to Fabian Lumentut in round 3.

2nd DKI Jakarta Invitational NMs, Jakarta 1982

IM Ardiansyah owned Jakarta in those years around. He practically swept over chess competitions at the city. This tournament was no exception. Ardiansyah won the master section quite easily with 1.5 points cushion to the runner-up Sutan Aritonang. The non-master section was co-championed by Edward L Tobing and Harry Siregar.
