Gunadarma IMs Circuit 1st Leg, Depok 1994

The 1993 Chinese National Chess Champion FM Tóng Yuānmíng showed a class of his own. He won the tournament in convincing fashion. He grabbed his last needed IM norm in the process. Indonesia also did well. The host registered IM norms for three players: FM Salor Sitanggang, Nathanael Situru, and Gunadarma player Dede Lioe.

Central Java Provincial Championship, Semarang 1994

Looking to the participant roster, the chess event promised to be exciting. Three veteran NMs, Maslan of Semarang, Salatun (Grobogan), and Masroni HS (Brebes), took part. Central Java’s NMs of the younger generation also plunged into the arena: Abdul Jalil (Semarang), Okky Irawan (Solo), and Achmad Yazid (Pemalang).

National Masters, Ambon 1994

The event turned out to be GM Edhi Handoko’s exhibition. He scored mercilessly, 18 VP out of 20 games or 90%. The one man show was easy to predict since no other national chess élite participated. NM Nessy Suheri, NM Cecep Kosasih, and NM Abir Dipo were probably the closest ones that could give Handoko a decent game.

Utut Adianto-Yasser Seirawan Match, Jakarta 1994

Originally GM Vassily Smyslov of Russia was the player who would play GM Utut Adianto. Unfortunately the ex-World Champion could not make to Jakarta because of health reasons. In less than a week the organizer had to find a substitute. GM Yasser Seirawan of USA kindly agreed to play Utut in such sort notice.

Asian GMs Circuit Jakarta Leg, Jakarta 1994

The tournament was all about Edhi Handoko. Handoko won category X tournament for the first time and he did it in convincing manner. He won five games and let only one loss. He topped the table ahead of many strong GMs: Tkachiev, Serper, Hráček, Blatný, and a bunch of Chinese best players Xú Jùn, Yè Jiāngchuān, Xiè Jūn, and Yè Róngguāng.
