The tournament was jam packed with seven 2600+ GMs out of ten participants. Top flight GMs like Michał Krasenkow, Mikhail Gurevich, and Ivan Sokolov were on the list. Veteran GM Lajos Portisch won the event without playing in full gear. He was a full point ahead of the runner-ups, GM Utut Adianto, GM Eugenio Torre, and GM Krasenkow.

GM Vladislav Tkachiev played two Indonesian players, GM Edhi Handoko and IM Andi Supardi Suhendra. The late Edhi Handoko belonged to the best players in Indonesia at that time. Andi Suhendra was a talented young player who won Asian Junior Championship 1992 at Dubai. Tkachiev won both matches.

Utut Adianto-Judit Polgár Match, Jakarta 1996

Indonesian number one GM Utut Adianto Wahjoewidajat played GM Judit Polgár in six rapid games. After four rounds Judit seemed to cruise to easy win with one point lead and two blindfold games to spare. To everyone’s surprise Utut showed his rare talent in blindfold and beat Judit in the last game. The match ended with a tie, 3-3.

Sofia Polgár Matches, Jakarta 1996

IM Sofia Polgár played three best Indonesian women chess players WIM Maria Lucia Ratnasari Sulistya, WIM Upi Darmayana Tamin, and WIM Lisa Karlina Lumongdong. Despite rating gaps, Sofia failed to play up to her billing. She managed to beat Upi Tamin but failing to win the others. She even slumped to defeat to Lisa Lumongdong.

Indonesian ace GM Utut Adianto Wahjoewidajat added another highlight to his already glittering résumé although this time he had to share it with GM Jörg Hickl, an eccentric player from Germany. For Hickl the win should be a relief after his disastrous performance in a previous tournament in Indonesia that left him in the bottom of the table.

World Microcomputer Chess Championship (WMCC) was an annual event organized by the ICGA. In this 14th WMCC in Jakarta, Stefan Meyer-Kahlen’s Shredder from Germany became the champion. Israel’s Junior had been denied entry to Indonesia and as a result a number of programs pulled out in protest.

Utut Adianto-Nigel Short Match, Jakarta 1996

GM Nigel Short lived up his reputation as an ex World Champion Challenger by beating the host player GM Utut Adianto 4.5-1.5. Adianto defeat was largely attributed to the holes of his repertoire as black player. Adianto had no answer to Advance variation of Caro-Kann defense played by Short.
