Anniswati Memorial Cup 1st Leg, Jakarta 2002

The late Anniswati was the wife of the then Percasi Chairman, Machnan Kamaluddin. The tournament under her name sought to rejuvenate Indonesian women chess. Indonesia placed as high as 11th in the 1996 Women Chess Olympiad. But since Upi Tamin’s victory in Asian Championship a year later, Indonesian chess had been in decline.

Gunadarma have been relentlessly treating Indonesian chess fans with a plethora of chess events over decades. In the year of 2002 they came up with an event in a new format, an individual chess league. The league was planned to have 8 legs. The best 24 players from master and 8 from non-master group would go to the grand final.

The chess event was designed thoughtfully to pave away unrated players to get ratings. The list of participants showed a good balance between the number of rated players and the non rated ones. The number of rounds was unusual long 11 for a Swiss System tournament with only 50 players participated.

Central Java Provincial Team Championship, Ungaran 2002

Semarang City team won the event. It was no surprise since the team practically fielded the best players in Central Java: Joko Santoso, Nursiyo, Jumadi, Saiful Fajar, and Marwanto. The event was held in Ungaran, a capital city of Semarang Regency. The city is famous as one of culinary destinations in Central Java.

Enerpac Rating, Bekasi 2002

Taufik Halay led until the penultimate round. All he needed was half points in the last round to conclude the tournament. Unfortunately his opponent, Andrean Susilodinata, had a different idea and beat him. The surprise champion was Tirta Chandra Purnama who entered the tournament as the lowest rated player.

The event was series of match between vice Women World Champion IM Alexandra Kosteniuk of Russia and three Indonesian young talents Andrean Susilodinata, Tirta Chandra Purnama, and Susanto Megaranto. Lady with a mission Alexandra Kosteniuk showed a class of her own by winning all the games.

Wismilak International, Surabaya 2002

Indonesia registered the country’s 8 best players, excluding GM Utut Adianto, out of 12 participants in this event. Unfortunately no one could manage to claim the champion trophy. The only girl IM Antoaneta Stefanova of Bulgaria saw off the competition, scored 1.5 points above his nearest contender Indonesian’s IM Cerdas Barus.
