Mission accomplished. WIM Irene Kharisma Sukandar successfully registered her first WGM norm. She was assured of the norm after settling for a draw with Slovene WGM Jana Krivec in the last round. Earlier in the half way of the chess tournament the WGM norm prospect looked bleach for the 16-year old Indonesian.

Susanto Megaranto-Wesley So Match, Jakarta 2008

The world’s youngest GM, 14-year-old Wesley Barbasa So of Philippines, continued his amazing streak. A few days after winning 10th Dubai Open, he dominated GM Susanto Megaranto in a one-on-one chess match at Pyramid Building, Senayan, Jakarta, in April 2008. The final score was 4-2 for the Pinoy player.

Male players in a women chess event? Indeed. IM Irwanto Sadikin and GM Edhi Handoko played ruthlessly and placed themselves on the top two. The tournament winner, Sadikin, let only two draws and trounced the other nine. The best female player was Evi Lindiawati from Indonesia at fourth.

1st ASEAN Masters Circuit 1st Leg GM-B, Tarakan 2008

The tournament was a fruitful journey for the players of Philippines. Not only the Elo favorite GM Mark Paragua won the event but IM Jayson Gonzalez also secured his much needed final GM norm. Another player who got the GM norm was Armenian Ashot Nadanian. The host had to satisfy with IM norms for FM Syarif Mahmud and Sugeng Prayitno.

Singaporean GM Zhāng Zhōng won the GM-A section without much difficulties. He notched 6 wins without losing any. IM Tirto, who was also unbeatable, came second and scored his first GM norm. Indonesian highest rated player GM Susanto Megaranto lost his hope for first place after losing to his fellow country man FM Tirta Chandra Purnama.
