Depdiknas WGMs, Jakarta 2012

In a rare occasion Departemen Pendidikan Nasional (Department of National Education) sponsored a rating chess event. Six players, 3 men and 3 women, joined the event. All the women had an age of 20 or less. It was clear that the main purpose of the event was to give the woman players an opportunity to improve their ratings.

7th Japfa Festival Women International, Jakarta 2012

The chess event ended bitter for the first seed WGM Anastasia Gutsko. She placed herself at 5th, only better than the tailender Indonesian Yemi Jelsen. The Ukraine WGM actually started very well. She beat Jelsen and Russian WGM Anna Burtasova in the first two rounds. In round 3 she was hit by a shameful accident. Her cell phone was ringing.

Indonesia-France Women Match, Jakarta/Bekasi 2012

France confirmed their favorite status by winning the blitz chess match, 3-1, on the first day. But the French delights ended up here. On the following days the Indonesian team stunned the French, 10-6 in the rapid. In the classical, France succumbed to defeat by about the same margin. Altogether Indonesia beat France 20.5-15.5.

2nd Indonesia Open, Jakarta 2012

Chinese are coming. Led by their first string players, GM Yú Yāngyī and GM Lǐ Chāo, China conquered the second edition of Indonesia Open Chess Championship. Yú and Lǐ, the last year winner, shared the top honour with 7.5 VP each. The third place belonged to 7 players with 6.5 VP including the top seed GM Ivan Sokolov of the Netherlands.

Indonesia-Australia U16 Match, Chesscube.com 2012

Indonesia defeated Australia 6.5-3.5 in an internet U16 chess match on April 21, 2012. The Australian team was made up of players most aged 14 or 15. The Indonesian team included younger players between 10-15 who had already achieved Asian or ASEAN titles. The scoreline didn’t even do justice to reflect Indonesian team domination.
