At first the chess event was in danger of being downgraded to an IM level tournament. A few days before it started, none of the invited GMs had ensured their participation. GM Balinas couldn’t make to Jakarta. Neither could Belgian GM O’Kelly. GM Torre still enjoyed his honeymoon. GM Quinteros had to be back immediately to his country.

17th Asian Cities Team Championship, Jakarta 2011

Twenty four cities from seventeen countries participated in this event. Total players was 116 with 18 GMs, 2 WGMs, 11 IMs, and 1 WIM. GM Wesley Barbasa So (2667), GM Yú Yāngyī (2652), GM Lǐ Chāo (2646), GM Murtas Kazhgaleyev (2618), and GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami (2606) were the top rated players.

2nd Asian Masters, Jakarta 1976

GM Eugenio Torre showed that he was in a class of his own. He won the tournament easily. One and half a point adrift was Giam Choo Kwee from Singapore. He secured the IM norm with Indonesian Arovah Bachtiar and Jacobus Sampouw, and Filipino Rico Mascariñas. This was the second norm for Giam. Soon he was elected to IM.
