4th Japfa Festival WGMs, Jakarta 2008

Mission accomplished. WIM Irene Kharisma Sukandar successfully registered her first WGM norm. She was assured of the norm after settling for a draw with Slovene WGM Jana Krivec in the last round. Earlier in the half way of the chess tournament the WGM norm prospect looked bleach for the 16-year old Indonesian.

Lodewijk Prins Matches, Indonesia 1956

A famous Dutch chess master Lodewijk Prins visited Indonesia in 1956. He spent two and half months traveling around Java, Sumatera, and Borneo. He played at Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Semarang, Medan, and Pematang Siantar. He also visited the home of the 1st Indonesia National Champion Arovah Bachtiar, the city of Banjarmasin, Borneo.

Depdiknas WGMs, Jakarta 2012

In a rare occasion Departemen Pendidikan Nasional (Department of National Education) sponsored a rating chess event. Six players, 3 men and 3 women, joined the event. All the women had an age of 20 or less. It was clear that the main purpose of the event was to give the woman players an opportunity to improve their ratings.

26th SEA Games, Palembang 2011

Vietnam is developing to be the next chess powerhouse alongside China and India. Their undeniable domination in the 26th SEA Games 2011 at Palembang, Indonesia, is just another proof. Vietnam seized 6 gold medals of possible 9. The rest of golds was shared equally by Indonesia, Philippines, and Thailand.

8th Japfa Festival WGMs, Jakarta 2013

WIM Chelsie Monica Ignesias Sihite and WIM Medina Warda Aulia fell short in the 8th Japfa Chess Festival WGMs Tournament. Sihite scored well enough for a plenty of more ratings but not a WGM norm. Aulia was yet to rediscover her form when she played amazingly in the Indonesia-France Women Match last year.

Susanto Megaranto-Mikheil Mchedlishvili Match, Jakarta 2010

GM Mikheil Mchedlishvili of Georgia had to settle for a stalemate 3-3 in his chess match against Indonesian GM Susanto Megaranto. The match was held at Pyramid Building, Jakarta on April 14-19, 2010. Mchedlishvili was the overwhelming favorite before the match. He had over 100 points of Elos compared to Megaranto’s.

Gunadarma IMs Circuit 1st Leg, Depok 1994

The 1993 Chinese National Chess Champion FM Tóng Yuānmíng showed a class of his own. He won the tournament in convincing fashion. He grabbed his last needed IM norm in the process. Indonesia also did well. The host registered IM norms for three players: FM Salor Sitanggang, Nathanael Situru, and Gunadarma player Dede Lioe.
