A twice Hungarian Women National Chess Champion WGM Tícia Gara played an up-and-coming 16-year-old Indonesian WGM Medina Warda Aulia. From the rating side the match-up was pretty even. Gara’s Elo of 2340 was not much different from Aulia’s 2332. The final scoreline confirmed the equilibrium. The match ended in a tie 3-3.

1st Japfa GMs, Jakarta 2014

The eventual winner GM Sergei Tiviakov Of Netherlands made amends to his slow start. He scored a quadruple in the last four rounds. The chess tournament ended with no Indonesian players good enough to grab a GM norm. A guest player Vietnamese IM Nguyễn Huỳnh Minh Huy was the only one who succeeded to do so.

Yuri Averbakh 8-Match, Jakarta 1956

The chess event was held to honor GM Yuri Averbakh during his visit to Indonesia. Not all of the best Indonesian players participated, most notably Baris Hutagalung and Ang Tjing Sing. Baris won the last National Championship held at Jakarta, 1955. He was arranged to play Averbakh in a separate one-on-one match.

2nd First Lady’s Cup, Jakarta/Yogyakarta/Denpasar 1983

The 2nd First Lady’s Cup Chess Tournament kept the first edition’s trademark intact: a lot of players with a lot of ratings. The number of players was a little less than the first but with a boost in term of ratings. The tournament had a category of XI which was significantly higher than the last year’s IX.

Kiani Kertas-Enerpac-Bank Tamara Rating, Jakarta 1997

FM Nurdin Askali of South Celebes surprisingly emerged victorious in the chess event. He collected 8 VP. FM Irwanto Sadikin (DKI Jakarta) gained the same VP but lost on the PS tie-break. At the third place was FM Kasmiran (DKI Jakarta). The Elo favorites FM Maksum Firdaus and FM Irawan Tjhin could only score 50%.

2nd Asian Masters Circuit 2nd Leg, Jakarta 1983

After taking a short break in 1982, Asian Chess Masters Circuit was back in 1983. The Jakarta leg was the second one. The first was held in Hong Kong. Indonesia registered a notable achievement in both legs. FM Ronny Gunawan won the first leg with Australian IM Ian Rogers. In the second leg it was IM Ardiansyah turn to go on top.

Indonesian Team for Asian Games Tryouts, Jakarta 2006

Chess has been contested in the 15th Asian Games at Doha, Qatar, December 2-14 2006. The tryouts were part of Indonesian team’s preparation for the event. They consisted of three matches involving three members of Indonesian team and three overseas players: Adianto vs Timman, Megaranto vs Torre, and Sukandar vs Krivec.
