As part of the preparation for the World Championship Match, Dr Machgielis (Max) Euwe visited Indonesia in 1930. Euwe played many games, literally hundreds of them, at the cities of Sumatera and Java. Beside playing simultaneous exhibitions, Euwe played matches with the best local players on equal terms.

Narsar Karokaro Exhibitions, Java 1913-4

NISB (Nederlands Indische Schaakbond) invited the Tanah Karo champion, Narsar Karo-Karo (aka Si Narsar) to visit Java for the first time in 1913. In the cities of Java Narsar played many chess exhibitions both simultaneous and matches. A game from the exhibitions appeared on page 189 of British Chess Magazine May 1914 edition.
