15th Indonesia National Championship, Malang 1974

Malang, a city with nice weather in the eastern hemisphere of Java, had an honor to hold Indonesia National Chess Championship for the second time. The first in 1958 has gone down into the Indonesian chess history as the most chaotic National Championship ever. The 1974 Natonal Championship marked the return of IM Ardiansyah to the throne.

5th Indonesia National Championship, Malang 1958

The final stage has never been played. The cause was something tragically funny. It was ‘funny’ because it didn’t make sense. We said ‘tragic’ since that funny cause was responsible for halting the most important national chess event in Indonesia. The lesson is we should stick to an agreement once it has already been made.

Alexander Alekhine Exhibitions, Indonesia 1933

Alexander Alekhine, the World Chess Champion of 1927-35 and 1937-46, visited Indonesia (then Netherlands Indies) for the second time in 1933. The first was in 1930. Alekhine played many simultaneous and blindfold exhibitions at the cities in Java and Sumatera. The record was staggering: 437 wins, 23 draws, and only 9 losses.
