Pre-20th PON Java Zonal, Cilacap 2019

The qualification phase for individual and team events was split into 5 zonals: Sumatra, Java, Bali-Borneo, Celebes, and Eastern Indonesia. The Java zonal qualification took place at the city of Cilacap, Central Java. This zonal was undoubtedly the most competitive zonal of all with star studded participants such as teams from West Java, DKI Jakarta, and East Java.

6th Piala Raja FMs, Yogyakarta 2017

The event was only a section of many of the 6th Piala Raja (King’s Cup) chess festival. The others were open FIDE rated, women, and age groups with more than 200 players involved. Six players participated in this inaugural FMs section: GM Cerdas Barus, IM Tirto, IM Dede Lioe, FM Anjas Novita, and 2 non-masters: Joni Jurmansah and the local player Iwan Prihastomo.

12th NISB Club Championship, Semarang 1927

NISB (Nederlands Indische Schaakbond) had since established a chess championship called Bondswedstrijden (Club Championship). The event had been held regularly from 1916 to 1940 at the big cities of Java. In the 1927 edition at Semarang, the pre-championship favorite Dirk Bleijkmans played strongly to win the crown for the 7th time.

1st Indonesia National Age Group Championship, Medan 1975

The city of Medan, North Sumatera, had an honour to host the 1st Indonesia National Age Group Chess Championship. Erwanto Wahjoewidajat represented DKI Jakarta. Tommy Supriyanto and Edhi Handoko played for DI Yogyakarta and Central Java respectively. South Borneo and three provinces in Sumatera also sent their players.

Anniswati Memorial Cup 1st Leg, Jakarta 2002

The late Anniswati was the wife of the then Percasi Chairman, Machnan Kamaluddin. The tournament under her name sought to rejuvenate Indonesian women chess. Indonesia placed as high as 11th in the 1996 Women Chess Olympiad. But since Upi Tamin’s victory in Asian Championship a year later, Indonesian chess had been in decline.

1st Gunadarma League 1st Leg, Jakarta 2002

Gunadarma have been relentlessly treating Indonesian chess fans with a plethora of chess events over decades. In the year of 2002 they came up with an event in a new format, an individual chess league. The league was planned to have 8 legs. The best 24 players from master and 8 from non-master group would go to the grand final.

17th Indonesia National Championship, Jakarta1976

The 17th Indonesia National Chess Championship introduced many new faces. IM Ardiansyah, Jacobus Sampouw, and Arovah Bachtiar still sat down on top but Monang Sinulingga, Ridwan Gozali, Mukmin Panggabean, MHS Nainggolan, Abdul Azis Riduan, and the other usual suspects were nowhere to be found in the big 20.
