It is not easy to avoid superlative words when we are talking about Utut Adianto Wahyuwidayat, a GM and a senator.

He was awarded a GM title after his outstanding performance in Dubai Chess Olympiad 1986. At 21 years old he was the youngest GM in Asia Pacific at that time.

He is the only Indonesian male player able to win a Zone Tournament. He won one at Genting Highland, Malaysia 1995. Previously the best achievement of Indonesian players was a runner-up position on behalf of Baris Hutagalung at Sydney 1960 and Arovah Bachtiar at Jakarta 1963.

Utut’s triumph in the Zone Tournament also made him the first Indonesian to pass 2600 elo mark on Januari 1st 1996 FIDE rating list. He reached his peak a year later with 2615. He ranked as high as 45th on earth at that time. During his chess career from 1981 to 2007, Utut won 17 international tournaments. He also participated in 8 chess olympiads and 5 FIDE KO World Championships. In his last years as a chess player he could still win a gold medal for 1st board in Istanbul Chess Olympiad 2000 and another one in SEA Games 2003 at Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.

Utut’s off chess board career took a hike during 2004-5 when he became a chairman of Percasi (Indonesian Chess Federation). In 2009 Utut was elected to be a senator of Indonesian Parliament. Now Utut is the head of the National Chess League Board. Although he is no longer Percasi number one, it is a public secret that he is the actual ‘King Maker’. He has the last say on who would be a chairman of Percasi.
