1982.05.07-23. Round Robin 15 rounds. 16 players.

The Wahono Cup was sponsored by Direktorat Jenderal Bea dan Cukai (Directorate General of Customs and Excise) which the namesake was the chairman.

The event was held less than two weeks in the eve of the 1982 National Championship. Some players thought this tournament was a good warm-up while the others preferred to staying away. The examples of the players in the last group were those who participated in the 1st First Lady’s Cup (IM Ardiansyah, FM Edhi Handoko, FM Ronny Gunawan, IM Arovah Bachtiar, GM Herman Suradiradja, and Jacobus Sampouw) and the FIDE Zonal Championship (Salor Sitanggang, Syarif Mahmud, and Sutan Aritonang). The 1st First Lady’s Cup was a giant round robin tournament with 26 players competing. In the FIDE Zonal Championship a player might play 15 times if he was lucky to go through to the final phase. The tiresome tournaments just finished in March.

The famous Tanah Karo player, Monang Sinulingga, quite predictably won the tournament. He played professionally. He didn’t push against the in-form players but was an absolute menace to players in the bottom 10. Monang completed his victory with the Best Game Award for his beautiful win to Fabian Lumentut in round 3.

The fiercest challenges to Monang’s domination came from Edward Tobing and 17-year-old Utut Adianto. Edward and Utut even beat Monang but their inconsistent play during the tournament finally paid dearly to both players. Edward lost to Utut and Ediwan Miolo. Utut fell down in the hands of Peter Mamusung, Sarwan Ginting, and Fabian Lumentut. Utut didn’t have time to ponder his disappointment too long though. In the next few weeks Utut became the youngest Indonesian player ever to have won the National Championship.

News of the grapevine said that the tournament was to promote Wahono becoming the next Percasi (All Indonesia Chess Federation) Chairman. Whether it was true, nobody would be complaining for such a quality tournament.
