1956.09.??-??. Round Robin 7 rounds. 8 players.
The tournament was held to honor GM Yuri Lvovich Averbakh of USSR during his visit to Indonesia.
Not all of the best Indonesian players participated, most notably Baris Hutagalung of Jakarta and Ang Tjing Sing of Pekalongan. Baris was the reigning National Champion. He won the last National Championship held at Jakarta, 1955. Ang Tjing Sing was ranked 4th in the same championship. Baris was arranged to play Averbakh in a separate one-on-one match.
As the above table shows Averbakh won easily. He let only 1 draw and crushed the rest. Averbakh was fortunate to escape in his game with Max Arie Wotulo. He blundered a pawn as early as move 10. Lucky for him, Wotulo overlooked an easy win many times before a draw was agreed.
Averbakh had a tight schedule during his two-week visit in Indonesia. Aside of the tournament and the Baris Hutagalung match he played a simultaneous exhibition against selected players at Jakarta.
The USSR GM visited Indonesia for the second time in 1960.
